SIDE MOORING ON QUAY OR PONTOON

To immobilize a boat along a quay or pontoon, ropes are used that are sufficiently robust and, if possible, elastic enough, which are called mooring lines.

There are three types of mooring lines:

a) Head and Aft lines :

  • The Bow line is fixed at the bow and goes ashore further forward.
  • The Stern line is fixed the stern and goes ashore further back.

b) Springs :

  • The Bow spring: goes ashore further back than its anchor point on the boat.
  • The Stern spring: goes ashore further forward than its anchor point on the boat.

c) Breast lines : ( Bow or Stern) are sometimes placed perpendicular to the centreline of the vessel and are essentially used to prevent the vessel from moving away from the dock.

An efficient and balanced mooring system generally requires at least four mooring lines, arranged symmetrically as much as possible (depending on the mooring points available on land). The aim is to prevent the boat from moving forward or backward and to keep it parallel to the quay, so that a few cleverly placed fenders are enough to protect it.

SIDE MOORING

For a short-time mooring, with a small boat in a sheltered harbour, without appreciable variations in water level, it is sometimes sufficient to simply use a bow and a stern line, provided that the two mooring lines form an angle of about 45° to the longitudinal axis of the boat. In this way, the three conditions will be met: the boat will not be able to move forward, backward or stray from the quay. However, the use of at least 4 mooring lines is still recommended.

If the mooring area is exposed to waves or water level variations, it is important that the boat is not too blocked in its movements, as the mooring lines or cleats may break. In this case, it is necessary to provide longer bow and stern lines and springs, adding, if possible, shock absorbers to be placed on the mooring lines. The number of fenders will also have to be increased.

BOAT DRIVING LICENSE : how it works

Boating season approaches, therefore, if you wish to obtain a boat driving permit, here you are with some frequently asked questions:

Must I pass theory exam, before I can learn how to drive boats ?

No. You can learn boat-driving techniques, accompanied by a person already in possession of required license, without having registered for license or passed theory exam. Nevertheless, you cannot register for practical exam, before you have regularly applied for license and passed theory exam.

For what kind or size of boat a license is required ?

In Switzerland (Bodensee excepted), cat. A license is required to drive motor boats over 6 kw ( 8 HP) power. Cat. D license is necessary to drive sailboats with sail area exceeding 15 square meters.

Is training with a professional school mandatory ?

Training with a professional, acknowledged school is recommended, but not mandatory.

What is the necessary amount of training for a beginner ?

Necessary amount of training varies according to candidates, however, 12 to 15 hours training can be considered as a standard basis. It is important to train in varied weather conditions and without long interruptions as far as possible.

How do I prepare theory exam ?

A theory manual can be ordered to Canton Authorities together with license application. Otherwise, many apps by private publishers are available. We suggest BOATDRIVER app, that can be purchased and downloaded on following web pages Motor boat school or Sailing school.

Are foreign licenses accepted in Switzerland ?

The beholder of a foreign boat driving license can drive on Swiss waters a boat with Swiss number plates as far as he/she is not a Swiss resident since 12 months or more and has a license of equivalent category.

Are Swiss boat driving license valid on the sea ?

Cat. A and D Swiss boat driving licenses are valid throughout Europe on inner waters (lakes and rivers) but not on the sea. Once obtained cat A and/or D permit, it is possible to obtain Swiss Yachtmaster certificate, that is valid without distance limits on seas and oceans throughout the world. Switzerland does not deliver “coastal” boat-driving licenses.
